You can use any combination and number of colours you wish, the total given here is for the whole garment, so you just need to divide the number of balls by the number of colours you have chosen to work with, and add an extra ball for the colour you wish to use for button band and trims.
 
NOTIONS:
Buttons: 5 (6, 6, 6) I used a mixture of vintage buttons that matched the yarn colours chosen.
